TL;DR My friends came. They loved Timber Ridge. We shopped and shopped and shopped and shopped. And had a great visit. My feet are broken. I have an appointment with a new (to me) podiatrist on Tuesday. The Pride monsters were a huge hit and now it's back to dolls. My new window shades have a fatal error. Regular life resumes this afternoon.

The details.

Julie and Scott live on the South Island of New Zealand in a beautiful tiny town. They have been all over the United States in all the big cities. This tour - two months - is driving around - first Canada and then the western United States (except California).

Even in the biggest town in New Zealand, they shopping opportunities are not what they are here in the US. They just don't have the selection and they have the add on of 'shipped to small island far away' tax. So here, particularly Julie, wallows in all the choices available. The last time they were here, two years ago, they wanted to shop and, for some reason, we ended up down in Federal Way where we discovered chain shop heaven. Lovely stores of Old Navy, Skeechers, Walmart, Target, etc.

This time they wanted to go back to all those places plus they found North Bend Outlets on Google and wanted to go there.

So we started at North Bend which is not too far up the road. And a lovely drive. But the outlet mall there is a bust and a half. The stores were sparse and empty. But, they drive was lovely. And we saw other stuff.

So we came back here and toured Timber Ridge and Issaquah. They are pretty impressed with Timber Ridge. and Issaquah always presents nicely.

Tuesday we went back to Federal Way and did not miss any stores. Julie had a ball and Scott got new shoes and it was a huge hit. Wednesday, there was more shopping and we found the Issaquah troll which was way more impressive than I expected.

Yesterday, Thursday, it was into Bellevue to that huge, lovely, downtown mall. And then to the conveyor belt sushi place for lunch. Fun and delicious.

In between, we've been enjoying Timber Ridge. We've eaten in all the dining rooms and tried all the various serving options except lunch. All have been pretty impressive.

Today they leave. They are taking the next few weeks to drive from here via Salt Lake City and Yellowstone and Mt. Rushmore to Chicago where they will fly to San Francisco and then home. It's such a wonderful trip.

Meanwhile, my feet are just screaming at me. Finally, on Wednesday, I sent a note to my doctor asking for referral to a podiatrist or any other suggestion. She got right back to me with a couple of podiatrist options and I was able to get an appointment here in Issaquah for this coming Tuesday! Yeah.

Oh and it's window washing time at Timber Ridge. I have a panel of three windows. The middle one opens. They use it to hang out and wash the outside of all three panels. It's a good system. Except. When the shade guy designed and the installer guy installed, none of us realized that the scheme will completely bar me from ever opening that window again. So no cleaning. Ever. I have now sent him a note asking what he can do about it. I'm guessing nothing. And it's not fatal. But they should not have been installed that way. Weird and a little annoying.

Today is the Timber Ridge Pride parade which is just about the same time Scott and Julie were planning on leaving and will block in their car. I suspect it will be a short parade and not interrupt the leaving for long.

And now I think I'm caught up. I should get dressed and ready. They will text me when they are up and we'll meet in the dining room for breakfast.

Shingles

No, I don't have it.
No, I have never had it.
No, turns out I have never had chicken pox or any form of zoster.
No, the only connection to potential shingles I have had is the horrid rash I got during/after radiotherapy. It didn't take Sherlock to fathom the connection.
So why did the NHS make me an appointment to have a shingles vaccination? I never agreed to it, don't recall discussing it. Turns out that Shingles is on the rise in the UK and assuming I reach my 70s I will become susceptible, so they just pencilled in a date for Bootpuncture, and texted me on the subject 2 days before, telling me to turn up. Heading the issue off at the pass long before I get there, they say. Very sensible. I cancelled.

I know, I know.

But right now I just can't think of these things. Once my next big C check up is done, maybe I'll be sensible.

Or maybe I'll wait til/if it ever turns up, and then flap around in annoyance at myself.

Hmm, tough choice.

Hmm, let's see. I really liked Conspirituality's "Dems Ask: What Is a Man?" episode. In general they've been doing a lot of coverage of Masculinity Crisis stuff lately and this episode, which focuses on quite pathetic attempts from the less-right wing of the American Party to re-capture the young male vote, via...studies and focus groups.

Well, fuck.

You can look to the wonderful example of New York to see a good counter-example of how to do it right, though this episode dropped before Zohran Mamdani's inspiring victory. If I were a more conspiratorial thinker, I'd say that the less-right wing of the American Party loses on purpose, and you need look no farther than their attempts to sabotage Mamdani's campaign for evidence. At any rate, the analysis in this episode lines up with what actually happened—we don't need a Joe Rogan of the left, we need people who can speak to frustrations and channel popular anger, not just for young men but for all genders.

And don't even ask me about my email!

Also: Comicsrss got a cease and desist from Gocomics, so now all my gocomics feeds are borked. I should see if I can find those comics hosted somewhere else and get their RSS feeds, but ugh.

Also also: What to know about the COVID variant that may cause ‘razor blade’ sore throats

If you are in due South fandom you know about the "infamous due South troll," she of many names and one obsession: for decades she has been seeking out due South fic and vids that don't jibe with her personal opinion about which ships and which storylines are "true or not". She was flaming me even before I posted my first fic...back in 2011 she flamed my comment that I made on YouTube about a due South vid that I liked, telling me what was "wrong" with the perspective of the vid and how I was "wrong" for liking it. She actively seeks out for reading and for watching stuff that she knows she won't like and then she reads it or watches it and then she spews out her hatred. The last most recent time that she flamed me -- before TODAY -- was in 2023 when she pounced on a fic that I had written eleven years earlier and said hateful things about it -- I did not respond to her hate and TODAY she returned to that same fic and in even greater detail than previously FLAMED THE SAME FIC A SECOND TIME. Hells, that is some tenacity -- REREADING a fic to which she had already "objected" (she told me that she "disagreed" with my fic) and then commenting further in the face of my previous non-response. /o\

I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree,
And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made;
Nine bean-rows will I have there, a hive for the honey-bee,
And live alone in the bee-loud glade.

And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow,
Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings;
There midnight’s all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow,
And evening full of the linnet’s wings.

I will arise and go now, for always night and day
I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore;
While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements grey,
I hear it in the deep heart’s core.

He's the patron saint of gardeners, and also taxi drivers (unofficially). See, an early and popular cab stand was at Hôtel de Saint Fiacre in Paris, and the carriages themselves began to be called fiacres, and it just spiraled from there.

What makes this even stranger is that he's an Irish saint.

Snow White and the Poop Cruise

My niece was up looking after the cats, and being a Disney fan, introduced me to the latest Snow White.

Hmm.

This bombed hard, mostly blamed on Rachel Zegler being a charmless sneery little goon in interviews. For sure Disney needed to have a chat about her working as ambassador for the film; when a trailer gets a million downvotes something's obviously gone wrong. But the fact is she's the best thing about Snow White. Despite some piranha-like chin waggling a la Keira Knightley, she's talented, pretty, can sing, dance, and play a saccharine part without being the spirit of cloy. The real trouble is that it's an excruciatingly bad screenplay with an overstretched plot, dull score, and uncanny valley issues through the roof. These latter don't just cover the nightmare dwarves (I don't care what Peter Dinklage says, Tyrion Lannister roles don't turn up every day and real actors with dwarfism could have used this opportunity/cash) but the whole CGI overload. It works in some places, like the interior of the cottage and the pipe organ, but often it's just an acid trip without the fun. Gal Gadot's not terrible, she's just got this terrible script. She does what's required of her, and it's not enough because nothing could be; nothing was ever going to save this badly conceived, badly executed project.

Speaking of badly conceived, badly executed projects, the cruise of the Carnival Triumph in 2013 has become infamous, but we knew no details. Now we do. In horrified awe we watched Poop Cruise on Netflix directly after Snow White, which made perfect poetic sense at the time and still does. This documentary is horrible but very funny. I never was a fan of cruises. Now it'll take bribery to get me on one.

But as entertainment goes, Poop Cruise kicks Snow White to the kerb.

Seriously tempted to drink the entire pot of coffee. One cup down, two more to go.

Big barney with Mother last night. She wants to invest in something she can't even name or describe, gave me a bogus address for it, and when I flat out said 'don't do it,' got angry with me.

I am not patient enough.

But I am wary of her being fleeced as so many pensioners have been. Got Bro to talk to her, and he reassured me that her understanding of banking security, firewalls etc is so honed as to be professional - paranoia has some benefits clearly - but he will check out the address and see what he can find. If he has flattered her enough, she may wait before opening a new bank account dedicated to this 'investment'. My personal feeling is to remember what she said many years ago re schizophrenia; that the voices never tell sufferers to do nice things like buy some flowers or go for a walk in the sunshine. The instructions/suggestions are always stick-a-fork-in-the-wall-socket type stuff, inimical, destructive, sometimes even dangerous.

I will leave her be for a few days. She got very unpleasant last night. She told me I had been short with her recently - I haven't, I've done nothing but send her pleasant prattle. She is probably referring to earlier in the year when she went through a phase of phoning me up and not being able to hear me, or me phoning her and her not being able to hear me. Bro thinks she faked that whole thing. She certainly couldn't explain it beyond the phantom 'hooligan' in the city who mucks around with her phone, and after anywhere between 5 and 13 calls in a row where it seemed she couldn't or wouldn't operate a basic phone properly, yes I got a bit frustrated.

Decision; Just peace and quiet today, me, the husband, the cats, the coffee. Bro said he could deal with it, so I will trust him. The whole situation might be less intense if he did his share of regular communication with her as he has promised to do so often. Never mind.

A walk up the Wrekin

We hadn't been up for a while given two awful summers on the trot

The Wrekin (pronounced ree-kin) is our very own local hill. It actually counts as a mountain as it's over !000'  (1335' to be exact).

Our little town is under the shadow of the Wrekin and is fully known as Wellington Under the Wrekin.

Today was forecast to be overcast but was a lot nicer than that so we set out- uphill all the way from our front door. It's about a 2000' climb from home.

The Winter had taken quite a few trees down  as it was a wild one and it's been a blowy Summer too.
