Just finished: One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This by Omar El Akkad. I don't know what else to say about this scathing, perfect little book beyond that I wish I could make everyone in so-called Western civilization sit down in a chair with their eyes forced open, Clockwork Orange-style, until they'd read it. Until they make this atrocity fucking stop. It's one impassioned cry in the midst of genocide but it's a very powerful cry.

The Dragonfly Gambit, A.D. Sui. I have mixed feelings about this novella, which is a military sci-fi about a pilot, sidelined after a career-ending injury, who plots an elaborate revenge against the empire that blew up her planet. I first encountered the author at the same event where I first encountered Suzan Palumbo, and this could be a paired reading with her book Countess, only I read Countess first and preferred it. Which is not to say that this book isn't good, because it really is, but it's a bit inevitable to compare two anti-colonialist lesbian revenge fantasy space operas that end in tragedy that came out the same year, y'know?

My main criticism is that it suffers from the same issue that a lot of space opera suffers from, which is that there's a big universe and a limited cast of characters, doing all the things. The genre wants scrappy underdogs with interpersonal drama, but it also wants its protagonists in positions of power, which you can do in longer-form work but is challenging in a first-person novella. The Third Daughter is very hands-on, and it's implied that Mother is as well, but at least the former is ludicrously incompetent for someone running a massive empire. Which is to say that if you've blown up someone's planet, you probably shouldn't promote three young people, all of whom are childhood friends, from that planet into critical military positions. Especially if you're going to fuck at least two of them.

That said, I like the romance in this one more, if you can call it a romance; it's wonderfully toxic. And the ending is a gutpunch.

Currently reading: Undrowned: Black Feminist Lessons From Marine Mammals by Alexis Pauline Gumbs. This continues to be excellent. One thing that I think is really cool about it, among the many things that are cool about it, is that she's decided to capitalize the word Black in all instances, not just where it applies to humans. Which has the intended effect of anthropomorphizing the creatures she writes about in a way that identifies them as the racialized Other, and thus part of the struggle for liberation. Look, this is poetry about marine biology, I'm going to basically love everything about it.

Lost Arc Dreaming by Suyi Davies Okungbowa. I just started this one last night but we have a future Lagos that is mostly underwater, save for five skyscrapers. Which is a cool enough concept that I'll overlook that the book starts with both a dream sequence and the main character dressing for work. I'm into the worldbuilding so far.

Late in May as the light lengthens
toward summer the young goldfinches
flutter down through the day for the first time
to find themselves among fallen petals
cradling their day's colors in the day's shadows
of the garden beside the old house
after a cold spring with no rain
not a sound comes from the empty village
as I stand eating the black cherries
from the loaded branches above me
saying to myself Remember this

The Temple of the Constant Heart

There's a thing I do sometimes, when waking approaches and I'm not ready; I know it's on its way because I become aware of my own heart beat. And if, in that state, I just listen, eventually it may slow and fade out in the return to sleep. But in that time of listening images may come too. This works best if they are not forced, not even touched. The best way to describe this is that whatever comes into ones mind should rise more like bubbles from a spring than bubbles in boiling water. The latter can be just as valid but with pressure there is also the chance of forcing a vibe or a narrative. Intent pushes too hard, leave it be. Just go back to sleep.

This time I heard my heart beating and decided to follow the beat that turned into the march of many people through the gates of a temple complex. I say march, it was not rigorous, quite informal, and dissipated quickly. Someone said something about the temple having all the cosmos in it, which seemed a bit extravagant to me. I saw a door opening in stone and beyond it something like a cloister. It was for me so I went through it.

Beyond lay a short cliff top plateau facing the same opposite, though this latter was covered in trees. It had been day in the complex but this was all night-time silhouette, over a vast long gorge below, out of which lifted the vivid pinks and greens of the Northern Lights, as if they could come out of the earth. But this could not be right surely.

It seemed very strange that in the Temple of the Constant Heart (how did I know its name?) there could be this anomaly, an area that looked like a cloister but when you got there was actually a place of potential danger and wildness. There was room enough on the rocky plateau, but the edge seemed abrupt. Not so much that you were in immediate danger of tumbling down the mountain but definitely a place where accidents might beset the unlucky or unwary.

I came back in and was shown a treasure, an ancient beautifully embroidered belt, with a design of two suns. The buckle was designed like their rays interacting in the space between them. There was much gold. I can't recall if the guardian of it let me pick it up but suspect she did. She was an old nun in white. I stared at it with the idea percolating through my head that inconstancy is a failing I punish thoroughly - these were the words that came to me, but the nun didn't say anything - I don't know who said them. The next realisation was an understanding that for all my reaction to those I consider inconstant, I am not entirely devoid of that flaw myself.

But sure, in my own language, stars have a connection with constancy. I left the room of the belt and realised I could hear my own heart no more, sinking back into the quiet of sleep.

Edited to add: Oh wait, it's Shakespeare's birthday, so stars and constancy make perfect sense today.

Sonnet 116

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments; love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove.
O no, it is an ever-fixèd mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wand'ring bark
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
Love's not time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come.
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom:
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

Or less well known Sonnet 14

Not from the stars do I my judgment pluck,
And yet methinks I have astronomy—
But not to tell of good or evil luck,
Of plagues, of dearths, or seasons’ quality;
Nor can I fortune to brief minutes tell,
Pointing to each his thunder, rain, and wind,
Or say with princes if it shall go well
By oft predict that I in heaven find.
But from thine eyes my knowledge I derive,
And, constant stars, in them I read such art
As truth and beauty shall together thrive
If from thyself to store thou wouldst convert;
Or else of thee this I prognosticate:
Thy end is truth’s and beauty’s doom and date.

So yes, thanks Bill. Happy Birthday!

This one was clearly ripped off the Ashley Madison hack, with a weird reference to Rohinie Bisesar (the woman who stabbed a stranger to death in the PATH Shoppers Drug Mart). The latter is even name-checked in the show, which I'm kind of surprised is legal.

The plot is needlessly convoluted. A hacker gets the database for Not!Ashley!Madison Dot Com, and appears to be blackmailing either the owner or someone in the database. People in the database include a well-regarded judge and a pastor of a megachurch. She's about to reveal the identity of someone in the database to her married best friend, but will only do it in person. They agree to meet in their usual spot in the PATH, but the hacker, who arrives first, is being followed. She makes her way to a Shoppers, where she's stabbed to death by a masked assailant.

Shade guy

A few weeks ago, they reswizzled our security situation at the front door. They moved the office and the sign in post and also moved the whole thing to new software. Today was the first time I saw it in action. The old stuff was slow and clunky and slow and clunky. The new stuff is swift. And it remembers. The shade guy was here once before - I gather a year or two ago - but it remembered him which made the already fast process faster.

I got both a text and an email with his photo the minute he signed in and he got a visitor badge. One process slick as a whistle.

He's a really nice guy and understood what I wanted and what I didn't want immediately. He's got the goods. Roller shades, wifi enabled to an app and to Google Home or Echo. Rechargeable batteries with a dongle I can reach easily. (My ohsoexpensive shades in the condo required AA batteries. 84 of them - about every 9 months and a royal PIA to change out.)

3 to 5 weeks but, he allowed as how it will probably be closer to the 3 week part of that since apparently, people aren't buying big right now... snerk snerk.

He had way too many options but I picked a color close to the window trim and a texture that I hope Julio will have no interest in. I asked for one shade for the three paneled window and one for the door. He was not sure whether they would do a single for the window because it's so wide. Fingers crossed.

He's going to send me a quote. I can sign electronically and pay up and he'll get it going.

He was a very nice guy and I'm happy to be doing biz with him.

Oh, his measuring tool was a laser and he said he had learned how to be very careful using it in cat households. Julio and Biggie were way too busy investigating his cases to see it but he was doing all of his measuring with a cat toy. He said that early on, he was measuring in a house full of cats and inadvertently had them crashing into China and knocking over a book case while he was trying to get measurements.

Where oh where

I got home from errands and there were no cats to be seen. Biggie has taken to hanging in the bathroom these days. There's a very large towel that hangs in there and often he pulls it down. I finally got a clue as to why just now when I went in to pee. He doesn't mean to pull it down, just down enough for a cat tent!

PXL_20250422_175121507

Julio has yet to be seen but he has lots of hiding places and he'll be out in a min. Biggie will stay in his hidey hole for hours on end. Julio stays 5 mins or less.

Errands all done. Lunch ordered for pickup. Dinner ordered for pickup. I'll toe soak again after lunch.

So far, the day is ok dokey.

Toe to toe

Last Wednesday, my big toe started bleeding from a split on the side of it. I don't remember hitting it nor did it hurt. I put a bandaid on it and all was good. Yesterday the bandaid was tired of being on it so I took it off and everything looked fine. This morning I woke up and that toe was one pissed off toe. It's not mad at the joint so I don't think it's gout. The only visual change is that it's red. But only a little. It does hurt when you press on it and it's not too happy about walking. Crocs help.

Dr. Google says soak in Epsom salt for 15 minutes 3 times a day. soak 1 is now halfway done. Dr. Google also recommends anti fungal cream which I actually have on hand. So. hopefully, I can nip this in the bud. I do not want toe issues.

Playing volleyball was fine because my swim shoes have lots of toe room.

I do think I'm going out this morning. Amazon returns and a couple of things at Safeway. Mainly tortillas. The shades guy comes at 2.

I have two small ottomans in the bedroom both of which have storage. They have held stuff I rarely need. The top shelf of my closet holds blankets and quilts. Yesterday I swapped everything so that my blankets and quilts are now far more easy to get to as is my iron. I've now lived here a year and a half. Maybe in another year and a half, I'll have it organized right!

By no one's request, I have downloaded Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent season 2 so that I can watch it so you don't have to.

This one is bad. Like, I normally like my trash TV but it's possible for a pop culture product to be actively harmful and the season opener, "White Squirrel City," is definitely that. It's also an incredible microcosm of our cultural moment.

Which is to say, a few years ago the cops cleared a tent encampment at Bickford Park. Residents were violently displaced, their possessions confiscated, and either forced to go elsewhere, minus their belongings, or shoved into insufficient temporary shelter. This is a major cause of death for homeless people.* Then, to film the copaganda show, they set up a fake tent encampment in the same place where the city had evicted real ones.

So it's one of those situations where even if it had been Great Art, the price of creation would have been outweighed by the moral violation. That said, it's also bad art.

Here is an article from the excellent Grind magazine about all of the things wrong in this episode. The author says it better than I could, and also points out its most egregious flaws, leaving me to nitpick and mock the minor ones.

Weirdest snack

I love raw pie crust. Yeah, I know, weird. They sell them all rolled up into log shapes at the grocery. I take a long and chop it up into one inch pieces and put it in a plastic container in the fridge and, when I need a snack, I grab one. I'm sure I'm not the only one. But maybe I am.

I went down to get brunch from the buffet line yesterday and the line was way way way too long and not moving fast so no thanks. I had a lovely day up here. Knitting and watching TV.

I was not overly sleepy when I went to bed but had no problem drifting off. A little after 9. I did not wake up again until 5:30 and then, after a pee, went back to sleep for another hour and a half. 95 on my bed's sleep scale.

John, who is 88, says everyone dies at 88. Clearly not everyone but he sure nailed the pope. John turns 89 in a few weeks so he feels like he'll be in the clear.

I have another Amazon return but also a week to return it so probably won't be going today. Tomorrow the shades guy comes. He's a recommendation from my designer friend and has done shades here at Timber Ridge but weirdly, I cannot find any details about his shades. Good yelp, etc reviews on his service but nothing on the shades. I want wifi connected shades. And I'm really not interested in shades that aren't. I could call him and get more details but I think I'll just let him come out and 'sell' me. Wednesday I think I might go to Goodwill. I might go to the one in Bellevue as opposed to my old stomping grounds in Seattle.

Back when air fryers were a brand spanking new thing, I got one. It was gynormous and loud and had fiddly parts. And fun to play with but soon it broke. The plastic bit that held the basket in broke off. But, by then, they had toaster ovens that also did air frying. Ok. So I got one of those and have had variations of those ever since. Til now. My latest is small because my needs are small and my space is small. But it's honestly too small to really keep clean and has other issues. So I put it away. And bought a straight forward, simple air fryer. And I love it. This one is way smaller overall than my first one with a larger basket! And it is so simple to just toss the basket into the dishwasher. At some point I may get the toaster oven out again but maybe not.

Yesterday was mini monsters day but today it's back to dolls.

I totally love the movie and soundtrack, "Jesus Christ Superstar".
And so I share another tune from the movie.
I think the actor playing Caiaphas has such an amazing voice.
And the actors playing Caiaphas and Annas made a great pair.
And you gotta love Annas's shoulder pads. lol...
